Cover Art Specifications

Your cover art is the first thing people see. Get the specs right or risk rejection.

The universal standard

Almost every DSP requires the same baseline:

  • Minimum 3000 × 3000 pixels (square)
  • Maximum 6000 × 6000 pixels
  • JPEG (.jpg) or PNG (.png) format
  • RGB colour space (not CMYK)
  • File size under 50 MB (typically under 10 MB is fine)

PNG is preferred if you want lossless quality; JPEG at maximum quality (100%) is also accepted. Avoid progressive JPEG — use baseline/standard scan order.

What will get your release rejected

  • Any DSP logo (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc.)
  • Explicit content labels or PARENTAL ADVISORY stickers
  • Pricing, sale information, or time-limited offers
  • Contact information (email, phone, website)
  • Watermarks or copyright symbols placed over the image
  • Borders or white space around the image
  • Stretched or distorted images
  • Non-square dimensions

Design tips for visibility

Cover art is displayed at many sizes — from a 64px thumbnail on a playlist to a 1000px full-screen on a smart TV. Test yours at small sizes using BeatCheck's DSP preview tool on the release page.

  • Keep key text large — readable at 64px thumbnail
  • High contrast between text and background
  • Avoid small, detailed elements that disappear at thumbnail size
  • Use the full square canvas — no white padding
  • Check legibility in both light and dark modes
